Delegates
Welcome, delegates, to St. Ignatius Model United Nations’ Tenth Annual Conference (SIMUN X). SIMUN X is a one day conference located at St. Ignatius College Prep in Chicago, IL. There are several things you need in order to prepare for the conference, most notably: the background guide and your position paper.
Background Guides
The background guide gives you a basic understanding of the political situation(s) your committee will be debating. The Background Guide is only part of your preparation, outside research is a must. Simply go to your committee’s page to download the guide in either Microsoft Word or PDF format.
Position Papers
As implied by its name, a position paper is a written document prepared before a conference outlining your country’s position on the topic(s) that will be addressed by the committee. Position papers should be about one page in length, single- spaced with 12 pt. Font.
The foundation of all good position papers is good research. It is absolutely imperative that you begin collecting relevant and valuable research as soon as you receive your country assignment, committee, and topic for a conference.
In writing a position paper, there are three main things you need to be thinking about: the relevant historical background of your country on the topic, what, if anything, your country is doing currently with regards to the topic, and what your country proposes to do in the future (i.e. at the conference) to deal with the problem. From the SIMUN Delegate Handbook.
All position papers should be submitted to your chair via email by November 5th. You can find the email address for the chair of your committee on your committee’s page.
